To meet up with that aim, Brabham and Tauranac set up Motor Racing Developments Ltd. (MRD), deliberately avoiding the by using either man's name. The new company would certainly compete with Cooper wanting to buy customer racing cars; as Brabham was still hired by Cooper, Tauranac produced the 1st MRD car, for the entry level Formula Junior class, in secrecy. The cars were subsequently called Brabhams, with type numbers starting with BT for "Brabham Tauranac".By the 1961 Method One season, the Lotus and Ferrari competitors had developed the mid-engined approach beyond Cooper.
